Accounting

The Accounting program at EBC New Castle provides the student with a comprehensive study of accounting and prepares the student for ready acceptance into the business world. Advanced instruction is given in tax accounting, auditing, cost accounting and automated accounting. This instruction, along with on-the-job experience provided through an internship/externship program, prepares the student for a career in accounting in industrial and merchandising corporations, as well as banking and financial companies.

As an Accounting graduate entering the field, you should be able to:

  • Understand the terminology used in the accounting profession.
  • Handle all aspects of double-entry bookkeeping for service and merchandising enterprises using both periodic and perpetual systems.
  • Prepare the financial statements for service and merchandising enterprises.
  • Account for petty cash funds, change funds and bank reconciliation.
  • Account for receivables, writing off accounts and discounting notes.
  • Cost inventory under FIFO, LIFO and Average Cost inventory methods (both periodic and perpetual systems covered for FIFO and LIFO).
  • Estimate inventory under the gross profit and retail methods.
  • Calculate depreciation expense under these methods: straight line, units of production and double declining balance.
  • Record disposals of plant assets--similar and dissimilar exchanges.
  • Compute and record the payroll of a firm.
  • Account for corporations: computing dividends per share; recording transactions involving common stock, preferred stock and treasury stock; preparing the stockholders' equity section of the balance sheet, and appropriating retained earnings.
  • Account for deferred income taxes and special items on the income statement.
  • Account for raw materials, factory overhead and direct labor in a manufacturing setting.
  • Account for personal taxable and non-taxable income in preparing a personal income tax return.
  • Provide income tax services for sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations.

Business Management

The Business Management program promotes the skills required to formulate short- and long-ranged business plans and make effective business decisions. It also emphasizes the personal and professional skills needed for effectively managing organizational needs. These include values clarification, needs assessment, group facilitation and leadership.

This program prepares students for entry-level work in settings such as management in the retail, marketing, and transportation industries, as well as inside sales in a manufacturing setting.

A graduate of the Business Management program should be able to:

  • Formulate short-range business plans
  • Formulate long-range business plans

  • Effectively manage organizational needs

Computer Science

The Computer Science program at EBC New Castle is designed to prepare students for challenging, rewarding careers in information systems. In this program, you will not only become knowledgeable about software and programming languages but will also take course work in the areas of general business, mathematics and accounting.

During the final term, you will participate in a supervised internship. Graduates of the program may find employment as programmers, programmers/analysts, and technical support and information systems personnel.

As an EBC New Castle Computer Science graduate, ready to enter into a career, you should be able to:

  • Perform systems analysis, including investigating, analyzing, evaluating, designing, developing, managing and implementing a computer system.
  • Design, code, test and document programs using various programming languages.
  • Identify types of computer software and be able to choose the best tool for the task at hand.
  • Train end users in the use of software.
  • Customize and configure an operating environment using DOS or Windows.
  • Perform file management operations using an operating system's commands/utilities.
  • Create, format, edit, save and print documents such as letters, memos, reports and tables; perform mail merges.
  • Plan, design, build and maintain advanced spreadsheets using formulas and built-in functions.
  • Plan, design, create and maintain databases. Organize, select and sort data. Generate forms, reports and queries based on the information stored in a database. Develop applications using advanced features.
  • Integrate data from one tool to another tool using the import/export or linking utilities. For example, export or link data from a database to a spreadsheet or a document.

Executive Administrative Assistant

The importance of the executive administrative assistant is increasing as the business world becomes more complex. Through this program, EBC New Castle educates students to become skilled employees who can contribute to the overall effectiveness of an office.

Courses in this program include keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications, electronic office procedures and spreadsheet development. Additional classes in accounting and business law provide a solid business background for the student. In addition to classroom training, students participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

  • Maintain a filing system.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail and shipments.
  • Operate a multi-line telephone.
  • Operate a copy machine (all features).
  • Operate a fax machine.
  • Perform basic accounting functions.
  • Maintain appointment records.
  • Plan, design, build and maintain spreadsheets.
  • Create, format, edit, save and print documents such as letters, memos, reports and tables; perform mail merges.
  • Transcribe using a Dictaphone.
  • Plan, facilitate and follow up on meetings and conferences.
  • Promote good human relations internally and externally.
  • Utilize multimedia software to prepare professional presentations.

 

To graduate from the Executive Administrative Assistant program, students must be able to type at least 60 words per minute accurately.

Hospitality

This program provides hospitality-specific courses enriched by additional required courses that give students a solid understanding of management principles and processes. The curriculum covers selling techniques, management, and human resource skills, legal aspects related to hospitality services, and food and beverage services. It also prepares students to work in settings such as restaurant management, hotel front-desk operations and management, and public and private food service.

In this program, business courses in accounting, communications, sales techniques and various computer software programs also offer you the knowledge and skills to seek employment in various areas of hospitality.

As a graduate of this program, you should be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of hospitality and tourism
  • Identify the important international and domestic tourism organizations
  • Classify hotels by type, location and price
  • Identify the functions and responsibilities of food and beverage service
  • List the classifications of restaurants
  • Describe the role of the meeting planner, the steps in event planning, as well as the various types of meetings/events.

Legal Secretary

This program is recommended for the individual interested in a professional career in a legal environment. The curriculum gives you training in business and secretarial skills plus a strong background in basic law, legal procedures and legal terminology.

The program emphasizes skill areas such as keyboarding, word processing and automated office procedures. It will enable you to handle all aspects of the secretarial function in a law office and support the flow of information through the legal process. In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

  • Maintain a filing system.

Marketing and Sales

The Marketing and Sales curriculum will introduce you to various aspects of modern marketing: personal selling, advertising, promotion and public relations. Emphasis is placed on developing basic marketing and management techniques by offering courses in consumer and organizational behavior, advertising, oral communications and small business management.

As an EBC New Castle graduate of this program, you should be prepared to enter the business world in the sales, marketing or advertising arena. The internship program provides the opportunity to be placed in particular areas of interest.

The graduate entering a Marketing Sales career should be able to:

  • Complete the full selling process from pre-approach to close.
  • Present a comprehensive analysis of a researched problem and answer questions posed by audience members.
  • Work effectively on a team as both a leader and player.
  • Understand and adapt to the personalities and behaviors of co-workers and clients.
  • Understand how a small business is established and operated.
  • Project a price for a product based on market trends and internal research.
  • Understand how economic and market forces cause changes in consumers' wants and needs.
  • Relate to consumers' environments and adapt a promotional mix and personal selling strategy to suit those consumers.
  • Write and present marketing, advertising and overall business plans.
  • Design and implement a promotional strategy for any product, including an advertising plan, sales promotions, a personal selling strategy and publicity.
  • Design an ad to appeal to consumers' wants and needs.
  • Create a layout of an ad, including logo, copy, headline, etc.
  • Utilize computer skills effectively to create PowerPoint presentations.



New! Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to perform administrative and clinical office procedures competently. Through course work and laboratory practice, you will develop the skills essential to the efficient operation of a medical office. Emphasis is placed on client interaction and communication, teaching and documentation.

In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area. Job opportunities for medical assistants may exist in general and specialized medical practices, healthcare clinics, hospitals and dialysis centers.

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, you should have the skills necessary to:

  • Apply legal and ethical principles to the provision of client care in varied settings.
  • Assist with management of a medical practice's finances (maintaining accounting records, processing payroll).
  • Perform basic clerical functions in the office setting (scheduling, typing, answering telephones and performing receptionist duties).
  • Provide client care using infection control procedures.
  • Assist with quality assurance for client care.
  • Collect and process diagnostic specimens.
  • Provide assistance to clinical staff in the area of triage.
  • Obtain client history and vital signs.
  • Prepare and administer medications.
  • Assist the physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Complete and maintain accurate client health records.
  • Utilize appropriate communication skills for the individual client.


Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, graduates are qualified to take the certification exam for Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), given by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) organization.

Medical Secretary

This program is designed to give students strong secretarial skills in keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications, electronic office procedures and spreadsheet development along with a thorough medical background.

By combining secretarial skills with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology as well as electronic office procedures, you should be well-prepared to enter the medical secretarial field. In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

Medical Transcription

This program is designed to give students high-quality training in medical terminology and medical formatting. You will have the opportunity to transcribe medical reports, consultations, letters, memos, admissions notes, operative reports and diagnostic studies.

In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

  • Transcribe in different format styles, such as chart notes, letters, history and physical examinations, consultations and discharge summaries.
  • Transcribe dictations related to different medical specialties, including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, pulmonary medicine, radiology and urology.
  • Recognize and use medical abbreviations.
  • Be knowledgeable in the use of drugs, drug categories, and generic and trade name drugs.
  • Use medical terminology accurately (spelling and use).
  • Transcribe with speed and accuracy.
  • Maintain a filing system.
  • Operate a copy machine (all features).
  • Operate a fax machine.

The Paralegal program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions assisting legal professionals in traditional law offices and firms as well as government and corporate settings. In such environments, the individual performs duties under the supervision of an attorney.

This program also prepares the student to work in settings, both public and private, where legal knowledge, analysis, research and critical thinking skills are of value.

Medical Coding/Billing Specialist

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in medical coding and/or billing in various healthcare settings. This multiskilled healthcare professional is trained in medical coding and insurance billing. Job opportunities may exist in hospitals, clinics, outpatient surgery centers, medical offices, management services organizations (MSOs) and home-based businesses.
