December Nurse Aide Program Graduates
Five students graduated from EBC's Nurse Aide Program on December 15th. The ceremony was held in Founders’ Hall and the graduates received their pins and certificates of completion. Attending at the school were Erica Coulter, Assistant Director of Academics; Brett Wiler, Director of Student Services; Tim Feltmeyer, Director of Academics; Mary Ann Nupp, Nurse Aide Training Program Instructor; and Donna Perino, Director-Erie Campus. December Commencement Celebration
Graduating EBC students received Associate in Specialized Business (ASB) degrees or diplomas at EBC's December commencement ceremony. The event was held Thursday, December 15, at the Avalon Hotel with a 6:00 p.m. ceremony followed by a reception for graduates, families, friends, faculty and administration. The commencement speaker was Melanie Brewer, Senior Field Representative for Representative Mike Kelly. Valedictorian Michelle Range also addressed those in attendance, while Christina Reim, Jacob Jagta and William McCallum were selected to lead various portions of the commencement exercise. Outstanding Student Recognition awards were presented to Joel Burlingame (Information Technology) and Michelle Range (Administrative Office Professional); Eva Rodgriquez was recognized as the award recipient for the Medical Assistant program. Congratulations, Graduates!

Debbie Marche Receives Adult Excellence Award
“These students have demonstrated their strong commitment to higher education and career success,” said Dr. Amir Moghadam, CEO of MaxKnowledge. “We are pleased to support such deserving students through the Imagine America Foundation’s Adult Excellence Award.” And, no one deserves this recognition more than Debbie Marche, practical nursing program student. She thrives on hard work, determination, helping her fellow classmates, and community service. She is an excellent student, maintaining a high GPA and excellent attendance rate, and she is president of her class. Debbie received a $500 scholarship award. The faculty, staff, and administration are proud of Debbie’s accomplishments and wish her continued success.

Katherine Spinks Recognized by Imagine America Foundation
What one word can describe Katie, paralegal program student? That’s easy. She is a leader at home, at work, and at EBC. Katie is a single parent with three children; and, despite the demands of home, a full-time job, and school, she is involved in her children’s activities inside and outside of their home. She is an excellent student, always professional, always prepared for class and happy to assist other students. “This is the type of student we have in mind when we talk about helping the next generation of leaders meet their career goals,” said Robert L. Martin, president of Imagine America Foundation (www.imagine-america.org). Katie received a $500 scholarship award. The faculty, staff, and administration are proud of Katie’s accomplishments and wish her continued success.

Coats for Kids
Erie Business Center is one of the official drop-off locations for Coats for Kids. We are asking for coats, jackets, hats, gloves, scarves and other winter apparel for children. Help those who are less fortunate and drop off your donation at the Academic Building, 246 West 9th from now through December.

Slots of Fun
On November 17th, students in the Casino Operations and the Meeting, Convention and Event Planning classes hosted fellow students to “Slots of Fun.” The event served as the fall student appreciation day. All students who attended were given faux EBC currency equivalent to their overall attendance rate. They used their EBC money to play casino games such as Blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em, Bingo, and Big 6 to win prizes (digital camera, USB drives, EBC hooded sweatshirts, and gift certificates to local businesses). Refreshments were also served.

What Employers Want
On November 2nd, William Koehle from the Pennsylvania Future Enterprisers Association spoke to the students of EBC about professionalism and the various elements of professional success including professional dress in the workplace and what employers are looking for in employees. William has over 35 years of experience in manufacturing along with 30 years of experience in the United States Marine Corps. Students and faculty from all programs were able to attend the event.

Constitution Day
On September 14th, faculty, staff and the students of the Erie Business Center celebrated Constitution Day. Each student was given a pocket copy of the United States Constitution and each faculty member was requested to spend some class time discussing the importance and significance of the Constitution with their students. Students were encouraged to take part in an essay contest, and answer a question set forth by the Department Head of the Paralegal program, David Neil. Jessica Hines, a Practical Nursing student, and Fred Eimers, an HRIM student, were the winners of the contest and each received a $25 gift card to Scott Restaurants.

Relay for Life
The August 2011 graduating Practical Nursing students participated in the Relay for Life Walk at McDowell High School Field on July 17th. The students raised $1000 and instructors and students alike spent the entire day making and selling chocolate-covered strawberries, spinning cotton candy, and face painting. This was a welcomed opportunity for the nursing program students to demonstrate pride in their chosen profession and to support our community. Great job!

Dissecting the Visit
EBC’s Anatomy and Physiology Essentials class visited the Lions Eye Bank of NW PA on July 20. During the visit, students had the opportunity to dissect a human eye. Upon dissecting the globes, the students were able to discuss the different structures of the eye, as well as see the differences between a real lens and an intraocular lens. The students appreciated the hands-on experiences and EBC appreciates Instructor Holly Fetzner and the Lions Eye Bank of NW PA.

Erie County Court House
Students in the Real Property Law course and their instructor David (Mac) Neil, JD, visited the Erie County Recorder of Deeds Office on Wednesday, July 20. Attorney David W. Bradford, Erie County Recorder of Deeds, explained the history of his office, the requirements for recording a document, and the payment of set fees and transfer taxes. He also demonstrated how to look up recorded instruments by use of the Russell indexes for paper records and computer alphabetical indexes for electronic records by searching for deeds requested by several students. EBC appreciates the time Attorney Bradford spent with our students.

Speaker Provides Insight
On June 15, Kim Michaels, RN, brought a very unique perspective to the material being taught in the Clinical Procedures class. She presented both personal and professional examples of the death and dying process. At times, the main focus is the terminally ill patient only, whereas Hospice focuses on the patient as well as the family. The interaction among students, Kim, and Holly Fetzner, EBC Instructor, provided a unique experience for all.

Social Media
On Wednesday, June 15, Joelyn Bush, Director of Marketing & Communications for the Erie Regional Chamber & Growth Partnership, was on campus to speak to students about their Online Reputation. She shared information about what is appropriate and what is inappropriate to post on social media, statistics about employer use of social media when screening applicants, and how to protect yourself. During this interactive presentation, students were also given the opportunity to share personal experiences and ask questions.

On Wednesday, June 8, students in the Integrated Marketing Communications
Course met with Larry Davies, McKean Borough Committee member. This term the
class will work with Mr. Davies to promote the sale of bricks for the
borough¹s Veteran¹s Memorial Wall. Mr. Davies explained that the wall is
being built in appreciation and recognition of the contributions of all
veterans. After a short discussion, students presented their advertising and
marketing plan.

Mandated Reporter Seminar
On April 7, Amy Blackman from the Crime Victim Center of Erie County presented the Mandated Reporter Seminar to students, faculty and staff. The purpose of the Seminar is to educate individuals on the signs of abuse and the responsibility of reporting abuse. A certificate of completion was provided to those who completed the seminar. Holly Fetzner, instructor, presented a contribution to Amy Blackman for the Crime Victim Center.

Student Appreciation Day was held on Thursday, March 31, 2011 Students from all areas of study enjoyed refreshments and registered for prizes. Prizes distributed included: Nintendo Wii, Portable DVD Player, Digital Camera, MP3 Players and USB Drives.

Employers Look for “Work Ethic”
Betsy Masi, an EBC alumni, was on campus March 15 to share her story with current students. Betsy started her career as a sales representative with the Talking Phonebook after graduating from EBC. She is now an area manager for the LocalEdge (formerly the Talking Phonebook). While sharing her experiences with students, she advocated that they learn as much as they can about computers and proper writing. She also explained the importance of work ethic and that she believes her success is a result of her strong work ethic. As a manager, Betsy reviews resumes and conducts interviews on a regular basis. As part of her presentation she shared some tips with students about resumes, interviewing and professional attire.

EBC Answers Call...
In February, the student body, staff and faculty responded to the needs of the community for clothing. Through generous donations, EBC collected over 20 bags of gently used clothing for the Caring Closet. The donations were taken to the shelter and were redistributed to those in need.

Erie Technology Incubator
On January 24, Russell Combs from Erie Technology Incubator at Gannon University spoke to the students in the Small Business Management evening course. He addressed the history of the Incubator, what services they offer, and the different types of incubators. Mr. Combs also discussed business plans and identified small businesses and companies in Erie that are successful.

Small Business Development
On January 20, Barbara Ward from Gannon’s Small Business Development Center spoke to the Small Business Management day class. She identified what is needed to start a business, the opportunities and services SBDC offers, and she also talked about developing a business plan. Ms. Ward also provided several websites for the class to view if they are thinking about starting a business.
