Congratulations August Nurse Aide Graduates
Seven students of EBC’s Nurse Aide Program attended the August 19th ceremony and received their pins and certificates of completion. Attending at the school were Tim Feltmeyer, Director of Academics; Gretchen Reinard, Assistant Academics Director; Michelle Coon, Student Services Director; Lucia Bonaminio, Instructor and Donna Perino, Director-Erie Campus. August Commencement Celebration
Graduating EBC students received associate in specialized business (ASB) degrees or diplomas at EBC’s August 19 commencement ceremony. The event was held Thursday, August 19, at the Avalon Hotel with a 6:00 p.m. ceremony followed by a reception for graduates, families, friends, faculty and administration. The commencement speaker was Rory O’Donnell, Training Specialist at the Manufacturer and Business Association. Valedictorians Cindy Marchinetti and Thomas Pursell also addressed those in attendance, while Fred Haynes, Jr., Crystal Sweet, and Gail Senger were selected to lead various portions of the commencement exercise. Outstanding Student Recognition awards were presented to Kelsey Lytle (Medical Assistant), Cindy Marchinetti (Business Management), Keith Bacher (Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management), Brenda Boyd (Paralegal), Chanel Mickel (Practical Nursing), Thomas Pursell (Practical Nursing), Luke Luciano (Information Technology), and Darnell Jordan (Information Technology). Congratulations, Graduates!

Relay for Life
Erie Business Center’s Practical Nursing Program students and faculty participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life held at McDowell High School athletic field on July 17 and ending on July 18, 2010. The faculty and students involved in the event were Dawn Johnson, Wendy Smith, Gail Senger, Jasmine New, Mike Rowland, Missy Stemple, Besim Hukic and Tom Pursell. Families of the students and faculty also participated in the event. EBC is proud of our students and faculty and their commitment to community service.

Community Service
Erie Business Center Practical Nursing Program students were invited to participate in the Women’s Living Expo on Saturday, May 26, from 1-4 p.m. “Thank you” to the following PN Program students who volunteered their time doing blood pressure screenings at the Expo held at the Community Room at Niagara Bank on 8th & State Streets: Kylee Fisher, Nikki Barnes, Chanel Mickel, Carla Strickland & Michelle Exume along with the PN Program Administrator, Dawn Johnson.

AES Visits EBC
On Thursday, May 20, EBC students, faculty, and staff welcomed Brendan Murray from AES (American Education Services) who shared important information regarding financial aid and financial literacy. Various loan types and repayment methods were discussed with strong emphasis on maintaining contact with the lender and the importance of loan repayment.

Faculty Wins . . .
On Friday, April 30, Faculty took on Staff members in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program “Bowl for Kids” bowl-a-thon at Greengarden Lanes. Although one staff member had the highest score, faculty members persevered and after an hour and a half were victorious – they WON!!! Faculty members included Linda Gidos, Tim Rowe, Lucia Bonaminio, Heather Oleksy, Becky Graham, Kevin Arrington, and Holly Fetzner; Staff members were Paul Pilatowski, Rachel Daniels, Tiffany Parker, Kim Clark, and Erica Coulter. The challenge is on for next year!

April Commencement Celebration

Valedictorian Wendy Sipple also addressed those in attendance, while Magdalena Villa, Katharine Frazzini, and Markie Sessamen were selected to lead various portions of the commencement exercise. Outstanding Student Recognition awards were presented to Wendy Sipple (Accounting), Brandy Harter (Administrative Office Professional), Markie Sessamen (Marketing), Katie Majewski (Medical Secretary), and Chad Carner (Information Technology). Congratulations, graduates!

Spring Term 2010
In addition to over 100 courses in over 25 programs at the Erie and New Castle campuses, EBC is launching its Evening Practical Nursing Program at its Erie Campus/MetroCenter. Completing the evening program in less than 18 months, students receive the same classroom and laboratory instruction as the day program students including EBC’s fully-functional simulation lab and clinical experiences. All courses, labs, and clinical rotations are conducted under the direct supervision of skilled registered nurses. Once again EBC responds to the community’s needs -- this time offering a nursing program for the convenience of its working students.

Wonderful Time, Wonderful Students

The “Jump Into Spring” get-together was developed, created, and implemented by the students in the Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management (HRIM) Program’s Meeting, Convention, and Event Planning Class. Jump Into Spring
Students and their families celebrated spring during a spectacular event on Friday, March 26. The afternoon featured various activities for children, refreshments, Easter baskets, face painting, egg hunt, and a visit with the Easter Bunny. The entire “happening” was a group project completed by the students in the Meeting, Convention, and Event Planning class. Great Job! Great Fun!

Students Participate in Dream Building
On Thursday, March 18, Erie Business Center welcomed Ms. Shawnta’ Pullium, Founder and CEO of Nurturing Hearts, for her inspirational speech. Ms. Pullium discussed the importance of following your dream and not allowing your dream to be deferred. Students shared their dreams as part of this interactive speech. Throughout the presentation encouragement and ways to overcome barriers were provided. Students, faculty, and administration appreciate Ms. Pullium’s vision.

Thanks to LECOM
On Wednesday, March 3, Dr. Randy Kuleza, LECOM Associate Anatomy professor, conducted a tour of the LECOM Cadaver Lab for EBC students enrolled in medical programs. Dr. Kuleza reviewed the structures of the cadavers and provided a question and answer session. One student commented “. . . will be able to visualize in my mind and understand what the surgeon is saying” (when reading an operative report). Students, faculty, and administration appreciate this opportunity.

Students Experience Eye Bank
On February 24, eight students from the Pathology and the Medical Insurance classes visited the Eye Bank and performed dissections. Instructor, Holly Fetzner, arranged for her students to experience the Eye Bank after covering the disorders of the eye in pathology class. “I wanted to give my students a better understanding of the human eye and its structures. I also included students from my insurance class. They had completed the anatomy and physiology course and also benefited from the experience.”

Heartfelt Responses
On Thursday, February 18, the Practical Nursing Program students visited the Highmark Caring Place, the Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents, and their families at the Bayview Office Park, 510 Cranberry Street, here in Erie. Kathleen Frisina, LPC, CT, the educational and outreach coordinator, provided an emotional and uplifting in-service on ways to communicate with young children, adolescents, and adults when they are faced with the death of a peer or loved one. The Caring Place not only works with families facing a loss, but they also help families create life-long memories for children who are experiencing a family member with a terminal illness. The Caring Place offers peer support groups (facilitated by trained volunteers) not counseling or therapy.

“Caring” Continues at EBC
Students, faculty, and staff held a “winter” clothing drive for the Warming Center at the Mental Health Association. Additionally, food products were collected for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Culminating these activities on Thursday, February 11, Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management (HRIM) Program students served refreshments before the donated items were presented to MHA. Four other local organizations (Catholic Charities, Erie Dawn, Erie County Drug and Alcohol, and Gaudenzia) provided their organization’s information; and, EBC’s Financial Aid Director, Heidi Salusky, distributed materials to students.
