Accounting

The Accounting program at Erie Business Center is designed to provide students with a comprehensive study of accounting. You will take courses in tax accounting, cost accounting, business finance and automated accounting. These specialized courses are combined with a study of business and management.

Accounting graduates are prepared for careers as bookkeepers, payroll clerks, accounts receivable and payable clerks, and accounting support staff.

As an Accounting graduate entering the field, you should be able to:

  • Understand the terminology used in the accounting profession.
  • Handle all aspects of double-entry bookkeeping for service and merchandising enterprises using both periodic and perpetual systems.
  • Prepare the financial statements for service and merchandising enterprises.
  • Account for petty cash funds, change funds and bank reconciliation.
  • Account for receivables, writing off accounts and discounting notes.
  • Cost inventory under FIFO, LIFO and Average Cost inventory methods (both periodic and perpetual systems covered for FIFO and LIFO).
  • Estimate inventory under the gross profit and retail methods.
  • Calculate depreciation expense under these methods: straight line, units of production and double declining balance.
  • Record disposals of plant assets--similar and dissimilar exchanges.
  • Compute and record the payroll of a firm.
  • Account for corporations: computing dividends per share; recording transactions involving common stock, preferred stock and treasury stock; preparing the stockholders' equity section of the balance sheet, and appropriating retained earnings.
  • Account for deferred income taxes and special items on the income statement.
  • Account for raw materials, factory overhead and direct labor in a manufacturing setting.
  • Account for personal taxable and non-taxable income in preparing a personal income tax return.

Administrative Office Professional

The importance of the professional administrative assistant is increasing as the business world becomes more complex. Through this program, Erie Business Center educates students to become skilled employees who can contribute to the overall effectiveness of an office.

Courses in this program include keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications and electronic office procedures. Additional classes in accounting, business law, management and technical writing provide a solid business background for the student.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

  • Apply principles of records management.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail and shipments.
  • Use proper telephone procedures.
  • Operate various types of office equipment.
  • Perform basic accounting functions.
  • Maintain appointment records and receive office visitors.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports.

Business Management

The Business Management program promotes the skills required to formulate short- and long-ranged business plans and make effective business decisions. It also emphasizes the personal and professional skills needed for effectively managing organizational needs. These include values clarification, needs assessment, group facilitation and leadership.

This program prepares students for entry-level work in settings such as management in the private and nonprofit sector, government settings, public administration and management and educational management

Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management

The Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management program provides hospitality-specific courses enriched by additional required courses that give students a solid understanding of management principles and processes.

The curriculum covers selling techniques, management and human resource skills, legal aspects related to hospitality services, food and beverage service and casino operation. This program prepares students to work in settings such as restaurant management, hotel front desk operations and management, public and private food service and casino management.

A graduate of the program entering the field should be able to:

  • Understand the history, current trends and future of the hospitality industry.
  • Understand hospitality services and management.
  • Perform computations using food and beverage operating ratios and yield management.
  • Perform front-of-house and back-of-house operations.
  • Use security and loss prevention procedures.
  • Be familiar with POS terminals and the CRS.
  • Identify characteristics and trends in healthcare, business and industry, elementary and secondary school, college and university, and recreational and leisure industry food service.
  • Practice food safety.
  • Understand responsible service of alcoholic beverages.
  • Recognize the differences between meetings, expositions and conventions.

Information Technology

The Information Technology program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for positions that involve the coding of web and desktop applications, installing and troubleshooting of networks and responding to end-user problems. This program prepares the student for entry into the computer field through instruction and hands-on lab participation to gain knowledge of standard computer concepts and procedures. Students completing this program are also prepared for the Microsoft Certified Professional exams 70-270 and 70-290 as well as CompTIA exams 220-232 (A+OS), 220-231 (A+Core), N10-003 (Net+) and SYS-101 (Security+).

Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to perform administrative and clinical office procedures competently. Through course work and laboratory practice, you will develop the skills essential to the efficient operation of a medical office. Emphasis is placed on client interaction and communication, teaching and documentation.

In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area. Job opportunities for medical assistants may exist in general and specialized medical practices, healthcare clinics, hospitals and dialysis centers.

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, you should have the skills necessary to:

  • Apply legal and ethical principles to the provision of client care in varied settings.
  • Assist with management of a medical practice's finances (maintaining accounting records, processing payroll).
  • Perform basic clerical functions in the office setting (scheduling, typing, answering telephones and performing receptionist duties).
  • Provide client care using infection control procedures.
  • Assist with quality assurance for client care.
  • Collect and process diagnostic specimens.
  • Provide assistance to clinical staff in the area of triage.
  • Obtain client history and vital signs.
  • Prepare and administer medications.
  • Assist the physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Complete and maintain accurate client health records.
  • Utilize appropriate communication skills for the individual client.


Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, graduates are qualified to take the certification exam for Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), given by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) organization.

This program is designed to give students strong secretarial skills in keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications and electronic office procedures along with a thorough medical background.

By combining secretarial skills with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology as well as medical office management, you should be well-prepared to enter the medical secretarial field.

Paralegal

The Paralegal program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions assisting legal professionals in traditional law offices and firms as well as government and corporate settings. In such environments, the individual performs duties under the supervision of an attorney.

This program also prepares the student to work in settings, both public and private, where legal knowledge, analysis, research and critical thinking skills are of value.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:

  • Conduct legal research.
  • Demonstrate and apply understanding of legal terminology.
  • Prepare and file legal documents.
  • Complete various legal forms (civil cover sheets, ARD requests and HUD-1's) with attorney input.

The Web Marketing program prepares students for all aspects of the marketing function. This would include a general survey of theories and principles, applying theory to practice and providing students valuable insights on challenges, opportunities and risks facing today's marketing professionals. Home Health Aide

The Home Health Aide program is designed to prepare students to work effectively in the home healthcare industry. The program provides instruction and skills development necessary for individuals to provide high-quality, personal care, ensure clients' rights, undertake safety and emergency measures as needed, follow infection control processes, act with professionalism and demonstrate good communication. Instruction includes theory and lab work. In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating agency/facility in the area.

Medical Coding/Billing

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in medical coding and/or billing in various healthcare settings. This multi-skilled healthcare professional is cross-trained in medical coding and insurance billing. Job opportunities may exist in hospitals, clinics, outpatient surgery centers, medical offices, management services organizations (MSOs) and home-based businesses.

Upon completion of the Medical Coding/Billing program, you should be able to:

  • Understand medical terminology and healthcare diagnosis.
  • Perform procedural and diagnostic coding.
  • Understand and apply third-party reimbursement for services provided to clients.
  • Assist the employer in legally and ethically obtaining reimbursement through accurate claims submissions.

Nurse Aide

The Nurse Aide program trains individuals to provide nursing or nursing-related services to residents of nursing facilities. The student receives instruction focusing on the role and function of a nurse aide, including communication, infection control, safety/emergency measures, residents’ rights, personal care and basic nursing skills. Overviews of restorative care, mental health issues, social services needs and care of cognitively impaired residents are also presented.

Instruction includes class participation, lab work and clinical time within a nursing facility. Upon completion of the program, the student will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide Competency Examination by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and be placed on the state’s registry.

Practical Nursing
Classes Start Monday, August 29.

Through EBC’s Practical Nursing Program, students receive classroom and laboratory instruction as well as clinical experience in providing nursing care. The program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to obtain entry-level practical nursing employment in hospital settings, physicians’ offices, clinical settings, nursing homes, home healthcare services, residential care facilities, schools, temporary help agencies and/or government agencies.

Located at 252 West 11th Street, the program incorporates curriculum focused on caring for people with illnesses, injuries and disabilities under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. Students receive clinical experience at Erie area healthcare and nursing facilities and have access to an exclusive online tutorial that provides practice examinations, content enrichment and nationally standardized tests, among other features.

The primary objective of the program is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pass a licensing examination (the NCLEX-PN) after completion of the program. Students also receive instruction in the interdisciplinary components of practical nursing.

Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, graduates should be able to:

  • Use medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols.
  • Have a basic knowledge of medications.
  • Perform standard procedures such as dressing changes, intravenous management, laboratory blood draws and collection of body fluids.
  • Complete ethical and confidential patient charting, monitor vital signs and distribute prescribed medications.
  • Collaborate with ancillary staff on patient care matters to provide the best nursing care possible.
  • Act in a compassionate, caring manner toward patients and their families.

Rehabilitation Technician

The Rehabilitation Technician program prepares students to enter the rehabilitation therapy industry as a technician, providing knowledge and skills through lecture and hands-on instruction in therapeutic techniques.

Rehabilitation technicians typically work in hospitals, clinics, chiropractice offices, assisted living communities and medical equipment companies. They may also work as home health aides and personal care aides. General duties involve transferring patients, preparing treatment areas, maintaining supplies, and assisting with training exercises.

A graduate of the program, ready to enter into a career as a rehab technician, should have the skills necessary to:

  • Promote asepsis and infection control.
  • Prepare and transfer patients from standing and sitting positions, including from bathtubs and wheelchairs.
  • Turn and position patients.
  • Assist with ambulation using crutches, canes and walkers.
  • Perform therapeutic exercises such as range of motion, passive range of motion and measurement of muscle strength.
  • Identify and assist the therapist with the application of therapy agents and treatment modalities such as ultrasound, massage, traction, hot and cold therapy, and electrical stimulation.
  • Identify and demonstrate precautions for common surgeries and treatments for medical disorders.
